This type of Rooster wine carafes comes from the Florentine tradition that tells of when Giuliano De Medici, brother of "Lorenzo The Magnificent", was saved from a band of assassins when a group of roosters and chickens crowed out in the night. The assassins were caught and trialed, and Giuliano lived on. From that moment, the ceramic artists in Florence made Rooster carafes to commemorate the event.
